Shahid Khan is the president of Flex-N-Gate Corporation in Urbana, Illinois.
Mr. Khan began working for Flex-N-Gate Corporation in 1970 while he was an engineering student in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He left the company in 1978 to start a new venture: designing and building bumpers with an innovative design—a lightweight, continuous piece of metal with no seams to corrode or rust. This entrepreneurial venture, which began as a one-man, one-garage, one-press operation, created a product that is today considered to be the industry design standard. Mr. Khan purchased Flex-N-Gate in 1980, and under his leadership, it has grown to a $2 billion global auto parts manufacturer with 13,000 employees.
Flex-N-Gate makes metal and plastic automotive components and assemblies, such as bumpers, grilles, hinges, instrument panels, pedal systems and running boards. The company also offers prototyping, mechanical assembly and sequencing services. Customers include BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors and Toyota. Since 2000 Flex-N-Gate has been rapidly expanding its global manufacturing presence through acquisitions. The company has more than 40 manufacturing plants in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain and the U.S.
Mr. Khan gave the keynote address at the 2006 Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Procurement Fair in Toronto. He utilizes other minority suppliers when possible and is well-known for community service.
Mr. Khan received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Illinois in 1999 and has served on both the College of Engineering Board of Visitors and the College of Business Advisory Council. He is a member of the World Presidents Organization.
Mr. Khan donated the Flex-N-Gate Computer Center at the Urbana Free Library. Flex-N-Gate is a sponsor of the Crisis Nursery, Festival of Trees and the Krannert Center for Performing Arts, among others.
